The Big Reveal!

We have finally finished our kitchen renovation! It took about 2 months and then some touch-ups (and then some time to edit all those pics), but here it is!

First let's take another look at the BEFORE

And now the fabulously airy and bright AFTER

(more after pics at the end of this post)

I absolutely LOVE it! I feel like I live in a magazine home!

So now let's take a little look at the process. I didn't realize this, but there is a correct order when scheduling all the renovations (we may have done some backwords). The first things we did (because I just couldn't take it any longer) was paint those bright oak cabinets. (For future reference: countertops then paint).

The painters actually took the cabinet doors and drawers to their shop so they could spray them down. And I didn't even know this was possible, but they primed the cabinets with a special formula BEFORE they sanded anything.

One of my most exciting moments, though, was pulling off the awful tile countertop on my island.

Very exciting!

Once we got the cabinets painted and the backsplash removed (actually we just put up plywood to cover the most of the backsplash), it was time to pour the concrete. The Taylor Brothers came out and set it all up. The whole process takes about 2 weeks.

By far, the most exciting part was watching them pour the concrete!

After that sat for a day, they came back and removed the molds. To give our countertops a look other than solid white, we took the trowel and purposely "burned" the dry concrete.

So we got a look like this.

I'm extremely happy with the results!

After that, it was just a "simple" matter of getting the backsplash up.

And TA DA!

The Good Deal on Subway Tile That Wasn't

Up until about a week ago, we have been really fortunate in our kitchen renovation. Everyone has shown up when they were supposed to and finished pretty well on time.

So for my backsplash, I saw some subway tile at Lowe's for a good price ($2.98 a square foot!) and scooped up a sample to take home with me. Of course, it looked fabulous.

So I went back to the store and ordered (or thought I ordered) 100 more so we would have it when the countertops were finished. The guy told me they would be in Friday, and I should call the store to check before coming in because it could possibly be the following Monday. He gave me a business card (not his - maybe this should have been my first clue?) and wrote the item number on the back. Off I went.

This was 3 weeks ago.

We called AND went by once a week and each time they told us that it just wasn't in yet. Good grief! So this past Friday, Josh goes down there, and they tell him there is no order for subway tile in their system (seriously?!?). Why are we just now hearing this? We were ready to start tiling yesterday!

Now, this is not the first time I've tried to order from Lowe's and it didn't work out. We've tried to order cabinet knobs and curtain rings and nothing ever comes in or gets "ordered." So Josh and the Lowe's employee go through the all the tile and come up with 76 square feet and see in the system that there are 24 more in Conway. Great, right? Wrong.

We drive to Conway to pick up the tile, and I start going through the box when we get there (I'm not paying for broken tile). Most of the tile is broken. I turn to Josh, "Did you go through the tile you picked up in Russellville?" Well, you wouldn't think it would be necessary considering these were brand new boxes.

We get all this tile home and start to go through it. Yes, many pieces are broken and (AND!) we have 2 different colors mixed in the same box! I'm not talking about tile variations - I'm talking about white and biscuit (they're name for off-white). Back to the store we go.

They refund our money for the broken/wrong color pieces but have no more usable white tile. What will we do? We head over to Georgia Carpet Mill. They always have good prices and can usually compete with Lowe's, but not this time. They're tile is $6 a sq ft. That's twice as much! We persevere, but can't find anyone who can come close to the Lowe's price (and we do already have 26 usable tiles - yep, just 26 out of all 100 - at home). So we look on the map and see that there are several Lowe's in northwest Arkansas. That's where we went today. (What? You thought we'd try to order more after all our other failed attempts? No.)

But we did it! It took 8 Lowe's locations (and a lot of sorting through boxes), but we came out with a total of 102 square feet of unbroken, unchipped glossy white subway tile! And hey, we got a flying burrito out of the deal (YUM-O!).

P.S. I will never use Lowe's for a home improvement project ever again.

Grandma sent me this image so I could do a painting. But it's such a beautiful place on its own that I thought I'd share it here first.

This is my great great grandmother's house outside Natchez, MS. We call her Nothermama, because...well, I guess a grandmother is basically another mama. She and my great great grandfather built it....er...a long time ago. Amazingly, the times I've been there, I haven't paid much attention to the curb appeal. But oh my! I can tell you the inside is wonderful - solid wood floors, beautiful staircase, and even though it's been updated throughout the years, it still retains that echo that old houses have (you know - kinda creepy, but kinda cool too). Looking at this image, it's easy to see why my Grandma has so many fond memories here.

I've always been a fan of do-it-yourself projects. And I love love love blogs that have great how-to's and inventive ideas. And a lot of the time I'll actually try them out. I can hardly believe it, but we're finally renovating the kitchen!

We'll be upgrading from this...

Yippee! We've hired all the people and I've cleaned out the cabinets so right now our dining room looks like this...

(For real. That's our real dining room. Looks like an episode of Hoarders, huh?)

And the painters came to take all our cabinet doors, drawers, and pull-outs to their shop this morning for spraying (let's hope they bring them back! Ha!). So our kitchen now looks like this...

I was pretty shocked that so much stuff could come out of our kitchen (especially since we eat out a lot), but I don't have to put it back for about a month and a half (first the painters, then the countertops (concrete!), and finally backsplash (subway tiles!) and new cooktop). I'm already starting to realize just how much I eat in, though (and missing my microwave). It's actually a little stressful having the kitchen torn up and people in and out. I may or may not have gone down to the store and bought some cookie dough to eat....along with a bag of Pepperidge Farm cookies.

Highlights from the Prix de West

So we went to Oklahoma City this weekend for our anniversary and the Prix de West. The show was huge! I've never been to such a big art show (granted, I haven't been to many art shows period, but still....it was big!). As we were leaving with headaches, we realized that you're probably supposed to look a little and then sit down. Look a little more. Break. Continue looking. We did not do this. The show was such an overwhelming experience. Plus, it was opening weekend and all the artist were there. (Which would have been cool if I'd felt competent enough to talk to them.)

But we did come away with some new favorite works/artist including:

As I was walking around wishing I could take pictures of the show, I saw other people with cameras taking close-up shots of the artwork (and there were loads of security guys walking around) and I'm thinking they're gonna get caught. They never did. So as we're leaving the show, I look at my map. And, basically, you can take pictures anywhere in the building, but you can't use flash in the Prix de West section. If only I'd seen that sooner.....

It was a wonderful show! Later that evening we had supper at The Melting Pot (dips for supper!). It was my first time! And let me just say, "Yum!" The only weird part is that they bring you a plate of raw meat for the entree and you have to cook it yourself. I cooked mine EXTREMELY well done. Then we went to the traveling production of 9 to 5. Honestly, not the best Broadway play I've ever seen, but very cute if you love Dolly! And, really, who doesn't?

The Anthro Dress that Should Have Been

A couple months ago, I was at Anthropologie. Just browsing. Didn't really need to buy anything. Then I found this dress. I tried it on just for fun - it's price tag was a little steep for me! And I loved it! Despite the fact that when I tried to take it off, a ribbon was caught in the zipper and I nearly had to rip the dress off. But no worries, the dress pulled through. And went back on it's hanger to remain in the store.

Yes, I took pictures of myself in the dressing room. I was alone. I wanted to show a friend. But now, every time I run across these pics on my phone, I'm a little sad I didn't buy it. Then, I see a preview for The New Girl (which I'm super excited about!), and there's Zooey....wearing my (almost) dress!

I checked the Anthro website. Sadly this dress is not there. Maybe if I can make it to Little Rock, I can find my size in the sale room (fingers crossed!).

We Copy to Learn

That's what Sarah tells us. It makes sense too. You find an artist whose work you love, and copy one of their paintings to learn how to create the same effect. So, I copied this Kenton Nelson painting (original here. It was also in Something's Gotta Give - above the fireplace in the bedroom!).

I'm really happy with the way it turned out. It's hanging over my fireplace mantel now!

Also, Sandi has been learning to paint like Kelly Reemtsen. She has done some wonderful stuff, but decided she would try something totally original. So I modeled for her!

Then she gave it to me! It's in my dining room!

I've been enjoying my painting classes so much! Of course, it helps that I have such a wonderful teacher! Check out the Lemley House Art Guild blog to see works by some of the other wonderful artists!

I love Anthropologies newest fashion set...I think.

I mean, in part it reminds me of summer barbecues....

But then, it also reminds me a little bit of mission trips to Mexico when I was in high school.

Had a lot of fun on those!

Also reminds me of a sorority luau we had my freshman year. Also fun!

I spent the better part of my evening (when I wasn't hiding from tornadoes in the basement) trying to clean and organize my closet. I used to think something like this was my dream....

But, seriously? Who could wear all those? Turns out, this is where I'm at. Only mine doesn't look so pretty. And guess what?

I don't wear all the clothes in my closet...but I'm afraid to get rid of them. What if I have to go somewhere and that sweater I've never worn is the only appropriate thing I could possibly wear? Pfft! We were at the beach last week, and I didn't even wear all the clothes I brought with me then. I wore the same things over and over again. I do that at home too.

I used to think it would be totally fabulous to have a library ladder in my closet. But looking at all the stuff I've bought and never wear made me feel sick! So that's it! I'm not buying any more clothes. I'm stopping here.

But I do need some shorts for the summer....
